A clutch of amateur golfers from Ballymena will tee it up today (Tuesday) for the right to rub shoulders with the professionals later this summer.

Galgorm Castle Golf Club will play host to the Specsavers-sponsored North of Ireland Amateur Strokeplay tournament for the sixth consecutive year.

An added attraction for the winner of the 36-hole strokeplay event is the invitation to play in the prestigious Northern Ireland Open, which takes place in August.

A strong contingent from the host club are among the 72-strong field, and they will be hoping to use their local knowledge of the course to good effect.

Galgorm Castle are represented in the competition by: Vincent Miskelly, Steven Penney, Daniel Reilly, Michael Dallat, Mal Bellew, Patrick Dallat, Jordan Hood, Jamie Sutherland, Phil Hanlon and Michael Reid.

They will be joined by Jake Carson and Paul Stevenson from neighbouring Ballymena Golf Club.

Valerie Penney, store director, Ballymena Specsavers, said: “We have supported this annual strokeplay competition since 2009.

“It’s a fantastic tournament in its own right, always attracting a full field of competitors.

“The bonus of being able to win the opportunity to play in the European Challenge Tour event at Galgorm in August is an amateur’s dream and gives this strokeplay competition a real edge,” added Valerie.
