Close competition for Galgorm Castle golfers

There was a closely-contested finish to all three Divisions in the most recent club competition at Galgorm Castle Golf Club.

In Division 1 through twelve Michael Alexander (2) opened briskly with a birdie and two pars to take an early lead over Raymond Ardis (5) and Gary McWilliams (3) by one point.

Following them were Patrick Coleman (4) and Owen Smith (2) a further point down.

Through Beechers Alexander Alexander had increased his lead to two points over the other four players. Coleman birdied the Grove to draw level with Alexander (par) a point ahead of Ardis (par) and a further point ahead of Smith (par) and McWilliams (par). Alexander finished with a bogey and a birdie along with Coleman (par, bogey). They were joined by Ardis (two pars) and with a better last six frirst place went to Coleman with second place going to Ardis with a better last six. M.Alexander won the Gross. McWilliams (two pars) and Smith (par, birdie) finished one point behind the placed players.

After the Maple in Division 2 Andrew Moore (7) and Richard Lennox (8) had opened up a three point advantage over Derrick McClelland (7). With two holes left to play Moore held a one point lead over Lennox with McClelland another point behind. Moore came home par, bogey to win by one point from Richard Lennox (two bogeys) and McClelland (two pars), both finishing together. McClelland took second place with a better last six.

In Division 3 Tony Quinn (9) started with a bogey and two pars to take a three point lead over William Rainey (9) (opened with a ‘ding’) and Cyril Reid (14). Over the next three holes Quinn continued to lead with Reid closing the gap to two points. Rainey was another point behind. A par from Reid up the Grove closed Quinn’s (par) lead to one point. Reid moved into the lead with a bogey at the Lowlands by one point from Quinn (double bogey) with Rainey (bogey) a further two points behind. Disaster for Reid at the last when he bogeyed the hole to and lost his chance of winning. Quinn took advantage with a par to win by one point from Rainey who finished with a birdie. Reid was a further point behind.
