Mark is toast of Fit N Running Club after Race Over Glens win

Mark McKinstry after winning the Race over the Glens on New Year's Day.

Mark McKinstry was at his brillant best as he secured the 2016 King of the Glens title in a course record time at Glenariffe Forest Park.

The Fit N Running athlete however had company most the way in the New Year’s Day race as Brian Camphell of Willowfield and North Belfast’s Andrew Annett broke away from the 367 strong field.

The trio interchanged the lead throughout and were still together at the top of the steep climb before an injection of pace from McKinstry and Camphell took them clear of Annett.

There was little in it going into the last mile and with his eyes fixed firmly on the prize McKinstry then made what proved to be a winning move as he cranked it up another gear opening a gap which continued to grow all the way to the line.

Mark’s time of 35mins 11 secs was a new course record with Camphell 14secs adrift in 2nd and Annett a good 3rd.

Also in action was Conor Shiels who produced a fine performance to finish well up the field in 25th place 42mins 48secs.
