One of Mid and East Antrim Borough’s most popular fitness activities is being celebrated this weekend.

The Mayor, Councillor Billy Ashe, is helping to mark the fourth anniversary of the highly successful Ecos Parkrun, this Saturday 26 March (9am).

Cllr Ashe said: “This is a free 5km run in the scenic surroundings of Ecos Park. Taking place weekly it regularly attracts well over 120 participants.

“This event is organised by the parkrunners themselves, taking their turn as volunteers and the social element is just as important as the activity.

“Participants vary in age, from under 10 to over 70 years and the event suits all abilities. Torie Tennant for example is totally blind and has been able to enjoy over 50 of the runs with the assistance of other runners.

“I am therefore pleased to be asked along to say a few words, present some awards and acknowledge the importance of such activities to both physical and mental well-being.

“This special anniversary run is actually the 190th parkrun to be held in Ecos and I am pleased to underline our continuing support for the event” he said.
