Ronnie produces above-par display to clinch victory at Galgorm Castle

The 19 Hole Trophy versus Par competition, sponsored by Rainey and Gregg, was played at Galgorm Castle Golf Club recently.

Ronnie Taylor playing off fifteen and Stephen Black (6) were involved in a keen and exciting contest.

At halfway both players were 1 up to par and they were still together through fourteen at 3 up. Taylor went 2 up on Black at Beechers with a par to a double bogey. The scores remained the same up the Grove but a spirited par, birdie finish by Black saw him join Taylor who finished with two bogeys at 4 up. With a better back six the Overall Winner was Taylor with Black in the Runner-Up spot.

In Division 1 through nine Sean McCormick (5) and Colin Steele (5) were two up. They were followed by Daniel Reilly (3), Stephen McAuley (5) and Jordan Hood (-1) at one up with Trevor Fleming (9) and Owen Smith (5) at one down. Approaching Beechers Reilly had moved two ahead and no one was able to catch Reilly over the closing holes when he finished with four pars to remain 3 up. McAuley with a bogey, birdie and two pars and Hood with a birdie and three pars finished together 2 up and with Hood taking the Gross prize, second place in the Division went to S.McAuley.

At the turn in Division 2 Robert Young (12) was 3 up followed by Jonathan McKeown (13) at 2 up. James McKervill (11) was 1 up with David Martin (10) 1 down. McKervill joined Young over Beechers with a par to a bogey and both players finished level each with a par and two bogeys and with a better back nine first place went to McKervill. Young won the Seniors prize. Martin who was two behind McKeown after fifteen upped his game to finish with three pars and with a better back nine took second place with third place going to McKeown.

After the front nine in Division 3 David McAleese (16) was 4 up to par followed by Joshua Hill (18) at 3 up and Malachy Kyne (19) was at 1 up. Jonathan Keys (18), Williaqm Kennedy (19), Richard Lennox (19) and Reginald McDowell (19) were I down.

First place went to Kyne with a better back nine followed in second place by Hill (better back nine) with McAleese in third. Kennedy, Richard Lennox, McDowell and Keys (parred fifteen and eighteen) all finished 1 up.

John Fitzgerald (24) was 2 up entering the back nine in Division 4 followed by Barry Mott (24) at level par, James Campbell (24) 1 down and Harold Stafford further back at 3 down.

Campbell after gaining shots at the next three holes went through fourteen 2 up with Fitzgerald who gained a shot at eleven only to lose shots at twelve and thirteen dropping to 1 up where he was joined by a revived Stafford who hit a purple patch and gained four shots through eleven to fourteen. They were a shot ahead of Mott at level par. Mott found form to gain three shots over the closing holes to finish 3 up. Stafford, Campbell and Fitzgerald finished together on level par with second place going to Stafford with a better back nine. Third place went to Campbell with a better back nine.
