The waiting is almost over to see who will be named as the Ballymena area’s sporting kings and queens of the past year.

The 18th annual Ballymena Sports Awards take place this Friday evening, March 4, in the Des Allen Suite at Ballymena Showgrounds.

A selection panel met earlier this year to choose the winners in the various categories, delving through a bumper entry of nominations, from a vast array of codes and disciplines.

This will be the first time the event has taken place since the new Mid and East Antrim ‘super Council’ came into being.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Council, Councillor Billy Ashe said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for us as a Borough Council to acknowledge and congratulate the past success of our talented athletes, coaches and volunteers.

“They all deserve recognition for all their hard work and ongoing dedication,” Cllr Ashe added.

Awards will be handed out in the following eight categories, while another local sportsperson will be inducted into the Sporting Hall of Fame:

- Junior Sportsperson of the Year

- School Sporting Performance

- Sportsperson/Team with a Disability

- Manager/Coach of the Year

- Veterans’ Award

- Team of the Year

- Services to Sport

- Sportsperson of the Year

- Sporting Hall of Fame

This year’s event will be compered by BBC sports presenter Joel Taggart.
