The 2013 Hughes Insurance Sports Volunteer Awards were launched recently, aiming to recognise and reward Ballymena’s unsung sporting heroes.

The Hughes Insurance Sports Volunteer Awards is a national awards programme that aims to reward the unsung heroes of local sport all across Northern Ireland.

The awards are open to volunteers from all sports and aim to unearth the real sporting heroes throughout the province. The judges are looking for the people whose drive, energy and passion keeps sports clubs and societies at the heart of the local community.

The awards will run province-wide, focused through 12 branches of Hughes Insurance and each location will have a winner when voting closes on 1 April 2013 and the decisions are made by a sporting judging panel.

Last year’s winner was Gary Donald who was chosen as the Hughes Insurance Ballymena Regional Winner for his work with Rascals & Bears at Ballymena RFC.

Sylvia Thompson, Branch Manager at Hughes Insurance Ballymena added: “Following the success of last year we are delighted to launch the 2013 Sports Volunteer Awards.

“Last year we saw some of the fantastic work being done by sports volunteers in the area I would encourage everyone in Ballymena to visit their local Hughes Insurance branch or go online to our website to cast their vote.

“We’re incredibly passionate about sport in our local community and have launched the awards to give volunteers in Ballymena the recognition they deserve.”

Each Hughes Insurance branch winner will win a trophy, £200 for themselves plus £500 for the team, club or group. All 12 will then go forward to the Northern Ireland finals and the chance to win the Overall Sports Volunteer of the Year Title including £500, a trophy and an additional £1,000 for their club.

To nominate a volunteer from your community for the award, please visit your local Hughes Insurance branch for an entry form or find us on the web at www.HughesSportsVolunteers.com. You can also check us out on Twitter @Hughes_FBI or Facebook at Hughes Insurance Northern Ireland.

The closing date for nominations is April 1.
