WILLIAM Morrison ended a difficult week on a high note by winning the Broughshane Playing Fields Association singles tournament.
William, along with brothers David and Andrew, had been mourning the passing of their grandfather Charles, father of another well-known member of the renowned bowling family Tom, who had died earlier in the week.
But in a fitting tribute, William produced a determined performance to land the trophy as the 40th anniversary of the long-running tournament produced a bumper entry of 235 competitors over just over a week.
Although also a member of the Broughshane club in the Ballymena & District League, William, as is traditional, was playing under the banner of his Churches League team First Ahoghill and he beat Seamus McGlinchey (St Joseph’s Kildress) 11-4 in the final.
After what had started out as a tight contest, with little between the finalists in the early stages, William gradually pulled clear to record a comfortable success.
The trophies in the tournament were presented by George Knowles of tournament sponsors Wrightbus.
There was further good news for William who received a donation from the Broughshane club to help with his expenses in travelling to Scotland where he has been selected to represent Ireland at the “A” series in Dumfries in March.
Club officials also thanked Robert McCullough, who carried out the umpiring duties on finals night, as well as club members who helped ensure that the tournament ran smoothly, from qualifying right through to finals night.
Donations, proceeds from the various raffles, were made to the Northern Ireland Kidney Research Foundation and to the Macmillan Unit at Antrim Area Hospital.
