AFTER four nights of qualifying, eight pairs made it through to the final of Ballymena Bowling Club’s Short Mat Tournament on Friday night.
Following an open draw, Stuart McSorley and Lisa Douglas (Ardstraw) took on Alan McCombe and Willie John McAlonan (BPFA) in the first quarter-final. McSorley/Douglas made the better start and in the end they ran out victors by 7 shots to 3. T
he second game saw Leslie Barr and John McFall (Golf Club/BIBC) take on Nigel Hamilton and David McCauley (Hillsborough).
Hamilton/McCauley started well and going in to the final end they led by 3 shots, but Barr/McFall stunned the Hillsborough pair when the lifted a count of 4 shots to win by 9 shots to 8.
There was a low scoring game between Noel Graham and Phil Dennison (Loughagherry) and Davy Boal and Tommy Cheevers, but Graham/Dennison won six of the first eight ends to claim victory by 8 shots to 2.
The last quarter final was between Alicia Weir/Stephen McKinley (Mossley/Ulster Transport) and brothers Michael and Thomas McMaster (1st Ahoghill). The McMasters scored 6 singles but even though the Weir/McKinley combination won only 3 ends they scored two 2’s and a full house of 4 shots to win by 8 shots to 6.
Both semi-finals were very close affairs. Graham/Dennison were all square with McSorley/Douglas after 8 ends, however Graham/Dennison claimed victory on the last end when the scored a single to win by 8 shots to 7.
Weir/McKinley and Barr/McAlonan could not be separated after the regulation 9 ends with the scores level at 6-6, however it was Weir/McKinley who claimed a spot in the final when they won the tie-end.
The final was over 10 ends and after 5 ends the score between Weir/McKinley and Graham/Dennison was 4-4.
The Loughaghery pair then took the initiative when they scored 4 shots over the next 2 ends, but Weir/McKinley hit back to level the game at 8-8 after 9 ends and so the title was destined to go down to the last end.
The impetus was with Weir/McKinley and it was they who claimed a single shot on the final end to win by 9 shots to 8.
Ballymena Bowling Club has thanked all the players who took part in the competition to make it such a great success and to the Sponsors - Smallcost Carpets, Fyffes and Smiths Engineering.
