GAVIN Burnside experienced the highs and lows of football as Wakehurst drew 1-1 with Portstewart on Saturday.
The former Ballymena United striker scored the equaliser for Ian Gregg’s side but then missed an 88th minute penalty to deny Wakehurst back-to-back wins in Championship Two.
On a day when both sides struggled to adapt to the strong winds and driving rain, Wakehurst’s first attempt on goal came on 11 minutes when Stephen Mellon broke for Wakehurst but Gary Taylor cleared for Portstewart.
The home side opened the scoring on 22 minutes when a good run down the right by Craig Ramsey caught the Wakehurst defence on the hop and he squared the ball to Liam Donnelly who was unmarked in the penalty area and he slotted the ball home, giving Keith Wilson in the Wakehurst goal no chance.
Wakehurst’s first corner came on 30 minutes and the loose ball fell to player/coach Darren Parker who blasted a great effort on goal only to see Henderson in the Portstewart goal manage to palm the ball away.
Wakehurst should have equalised on 41 minutes when the impressive Parker put Paul Borelan in with an inch perfect pass splitting the Portstewart defence but unfortunately another chance went begging.
Wakehurst came out in the second half with the wind at their back and from the kick off were on the attack.
It was all Wakehurst and on 52 minutes Gavin Burnside equalised for Wakehurst with a great drive giving the goalkeeper no chance to make it 1-1.
Wakehurst had a few opportunities to take the lead in the latter part of the second half but none better than the penalty award on 88 minutes when Gavin Burnside was fouled in the penalty area.
Burnside himself took the penalty but unfortunately the goalkeeper made a great save to deny Wakehurst what would have been the three points.
