Noel and Eileen Hamilton worked with the ‘Overseas Missionary Fellowship’ in Japan for many years and narrowly escaped the tsunami that engulfed parts of Japan in 2011, experiencing its aftershocks.

The Women’s Institute meeting took the form of the traditional visitors’ night and the Broughsbane members were joined by groups from the Institutes of Ahoghill, Armoy, Carnlough, Cullybackey, Gracehill & Galgorm, Randalstown, as well as Broughshane Senior Citizens, and Broughshane Sewing and Craft Class.

They heard how guest speakers Noel and Eileen, both fluent in Japanese, helped rebuild 520 houses damaged in the tsunami and that they still return regularly to Japan.

Noel demonstrated three Japanese style floral arrangements and prepared a Japanese meal for all to sample while Eileen gave an account of a typical day in the life of a Japanese woman and displayed a traditional hand crafted wedding kimono which can cost up to £15,000.

Thanks were extended to them both by vice-president Annie Davison.

Jean Graham (Ahoghill WI) won the competition for an oriental recipe with Iris McFetridge second and Anne McMaster third. The magazine prize was won by Iris McFetridge.

Members were informed that the Broughshane W.I. outing to Mount Stewart will take place on Saturday, June 4. and that Broughshane W.I. will also be present at Ballymena Agricultural Show.
