A Ballymena woman has stepped out and stepped up for a charitable cause that's very close to her heart - The Smiles Foundation Romania.

Former childminder, Joye Carson has walked 63.3 miles all the way from Larne to Portstewart, the equivalent of 149,940 steps, in just five days in a bid to raise £5,000 to enable the charity to build a house for a homeless family.

She has, however, passed that original target, raising nearly £14,000 in sponsorship

Joye, from Rathmore Heights, said: “People have been really amazing, generous and kind.

“Smiles Foundation works with people in Romania who have a very poor quality of life. In many cases they don’t have a home or if they do it is one that we would not even put animals in. The main thing that we seek to do is to bring them hope.”

Joye and her husband Robin have been out to Romania with ‘Smiles’ on four occasions and hope to return for a fifth time in July to be part of the team that will build a house for a family. You can still donate to Joye’s walk by logging on to: www.justgiving.com/Joye-carson1
