Crafty Claire puts her ceramic skills on show

Claire Murdock was the recipient of a Kilkenny Group Student Award at the opening of Cré, an exhibition of work by the graduates, in the National Craft Gallery.

She was one of four graduates from the course who were selected by Kilkenny Group to have their work showcased in the windows of Kilkenny Group’s flagship store on Nassau Street in Dublin.

The exhibition, opened at the National Craft Gallery, Kilkenny, will run until August 1. Cré, an Irish word meaning ‘earthen’ or ‘made of clay’, was officially launched by Dr. Audrey Whitty, Keeper of the Art and Industrial Division, National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts and History.

Cré showcases the innovation and diversity in ceramic design and techniques of ten of Ireland’s newest makers, with the contemporary work in each graduate’s signature style reflecting their individual technical ability and design aesthetic. The exhibition gives visitors the opportunity to admire and acquire the creative and individual work by these emerging craftspeople.

A number of this year’s graduates will progress to further training or travel to gain additional experience abroad while others plan to develop their own studios.

Established by the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland in 2000, the National Craft Gallery is Ireland’s leading centre for contemporary craft and design. It exhibits Irish and international designers, artists and makers who push boundaries in their engagement with the making process.
