Gracehill and Ahoghill collect bloom prizes

The winners of the 2014 Translink Ulster in Bloom Competition have recived their trophies at a special awards ceremony in Malone House, Belfast.

2014 marked the 36th year of the Translink Ulster in Bloom Competition which is co-ordinated by the Northern Ireland Local Government Association.

The 2014 Translink Ulster in Bloom Competition category winners were: City - Derry City Large Town - Antrim, Town - Larne, Small Town - Ahoghill, Large Village - Hillsborough, Village - Glenarm, Small Village – Scarva.

The ‘Most Improved’ title went jointly to Gracehill and Limavady and the ‘Roses in Towns’ award winner is Lisburn City. Special Award winners are: Antrim Borough Council and Castlereagh Borough Council in recognition of efforts to support biodiversity along with The Riverside Bed & Breakfast - Cushendall, Edenvilla Park & Secret Garden - Portadown and The Old Inn, Crawfordsburn for their outstanding plant/floral presentations.

Wallace Elder from ‘Ahoghill in Bloom’ was the winner of the Ulsterbus Tours Community Champion Award in recognition of the lasting and positive difference he has made to his local area by embracing the ‘Ulster in Bloom’ ethos. Wallace was nominated by Cllr Audrey Wales, Ballymena Borough Council.

Winner of the Tourism NI ‘Giro d’Italia’ Award was Loughgall (Co Armagh) for demonstrating the best support for the ‘Giro d’Italia’ legacy theme.

The Best Station title was scooped by Ballymoney Train Station and the Community Rail Halt Award went to Brighter Whitehead Community for their work at Whitehead Train Station.
