Heritage on your doorstep!

Now in its 18th year, the annual cultural event will see over 300 properties open their doors for free, with many exciting events across Northern Ireland on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September6.

Mid and East Antrim Borough will unlock the doors to nine new locations in 2016, including castle ruins, town halls, market yards, stately homes, churches and even a motte & bailey.

A further 20 locations will reopen their doors to the public, including favourites such as Flame Gasworks Museum, Blackhead Councillor Audrey Wales, Mayor of Mid & east Antrim said: “We are delighted to once again support European Heritage Open Days in September and to welcome visitors to discover something new about our Borough. This year’s theme is ‘Heritage Communities’ and, as a Borough steeped in rich history, we are actively working to protect our heritage for future generations and promote community involvement with our history and culture.”

“That’s why cultural events such as this are so important and I would encourage everyone to take the opportunity to discover something new this European Heritage Open Day weekend. Whether you live in Mid & East Antrim or are travelling from further afield, there’s plenty to discover.”

“With 29 properties and locations open freely to the public for exploration and many family friendly, there really is something for everyone, both young and old – from historical buildings such as Gracehill Old School, Ballymena, and ancient ruins, including Kilwaughter Castle in Larne, to the contemporary architecture of Origami House which was recently crowned County Antrim BBC House of the Year.”
