Ask your pharmacist week

The Health and Social Care Board (HSCB) is encouraging people to speak to their local pharmacist for advice and treatment as part of Ask Your Pharmacist Week (10-17 November).

This year’s focus is on asking your pharmacist for advice on treating common ailments as well as other community pharmacy-based support that can help keep healthy during the winter months.

Joe Brogan, Assistant Director of Integrated Care – Pharmacy & Medicines Management at HSCB, stated: “Your community pharmacy is a convenient place where you can get help for coughs and sneezes and health concerns which don’t require a GP or hospital appointment.”

“Pharmacists can offer a range of extra services, including help to quit smoking, while some provide free blood pressure, cholesterol and BMI checks.”

Roisin McLarnon, Community Pharmacist, said: “Many people don’t realise the range of services available from their local pharmacist. On top of dispensing prescriptions, they can offer free expert advice on a various health issues and common complaints – which is especially helpful with the winter drawing in.”

“Ask Your Pharmacist Week hopefully will encourage people to avoid unnecessary GP and Emergency Department visits, changing people’s attitudes regarding where they go for healthcare needs.”
