Mid and East Antrim flag tribute to emergency services

Emergency Services Day is being marked in Mid and East Antrim today (Wednesday) with the flying of a flag at three civic buildings in the borough.

The tribute has added poignancy this year as it recognises the contribution of the emergency services during the ongoing Covid pandemic.

Speaking at a meeting of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council on Monday evening, Larne Lough DUP Councillor Gregg McKeen said: “The emergency services have been working flat out. I think it is really appropriate that as a council to highlight this dedication.

“I am happy to propose we highlight the great service done over the last few months as recognition from this council.”

The Emergency Services Day flag was hoisted this morning at 9am at Smiley Buildings in Larne, Carrickfergus Town Hall and The Braid in Ballymena where it will remain in place for the day.

Emergency Services Day promotes the work of the emergency services, using the emergency services responsibly, educates the public about basic lifesaving skills, and promotes career and volunteering opportunities available.

Volunteers are also regarded as “an essential part of the emergency services family”. Roles include; retained firefighters, NHS community responders, St John Ambulance, RNLI, search and rescue and Coastguard volunteers (read here).
