Kerry’s ‘blessed’ time at U.S. summer camp

Kerry McQuillan, from Ballymoney Road, fulfilled the role of a Senior Counsellor at a Salvation Army run project in Pittsburgh during July and August.

Now back home, she recalls: “I ended up getting placed in a cabin with six-year-old boys all summer but I loved their enthusiasm about everything and the energy and life they brought to every day!

“I also got to teach dance classes out there every week and it was such a privilege to get to work with and influence so many children, young and old, over my time there,” said Kerry who admitted that being with such young boys 24/7 “was very tiring at times” as “they needed basically everything done for them”.

Kerry was surprised by how open to talking about Jesus the young campers were and their thirst to know more.

She said: “It’s easy to think of children as young as six as too young to understand spiritual or Christian things and I had that idea completely challenged this summer as I got to see how much they could understand and what they were capable of, especially in regard to praying.”

During her time there, Kerry had the privilege of leading 47 campers to Christ, with hundreds of children and teens making commitments throughout the whole camp. She says: “I’d love us to pray for them as they continue their journey once they leave camp and go back to their, often very difficult, home lives.”
