The Beat Generation was a group of authors whose literature explored and influenced American culture in the post-World War II era.

Popularised in the 1950s, the central elements of Beat culture are the rejection of standard narrative values, the spiritual quest, exploration of American and Eastern religions, rejection of materialism, portrayals of the human condition, experimentation and exploration.

It was visual from the outset and attracted a number of artists, photographers and film makers into their circle, so it is no surprise that the artists featured in Subterraneans have all in some way come under the spell or influence of Beat culture in the 1940s and 1950s.
