Slugfest ... having a snail of a time in the garden

It’s the garden invasion that has seen slugs and snails arrive in their thousands as the garden pests enjoy the wet, mild weather.

Sales of slug pellets at the UK’s largest garden centre, B&Q, are up 74 per cent compared to this time last year as gardeners stock up on products to get rid of snails and slugs from their gardens.

Compared to the rain soaked month of May sales are also up 31 per cent as the continuous wet and mild weather had proven the perfect breeding climate.

A B&Q spokesperson said: ”With gardens coming into bloom the last thing that gardeners will be wanting to see on their patch is snails and slugs. So, a quick fix to keep gardens looking their best and slug and snail free is to pick up a pack of slug pellets. They’ll kill both creatures and will keep plants looking their best. To help gardeners cope with the wet conditions we’ve also uploaded 100 new videos on our Youtube channel giving expert advice.”

In all of B&Q’s 360 stores, customers are able to get their hands on some top tips for keeping slugs and snails at bay from in-store Horti experts. The dedicated team of garden experts suggest some quirky ways other than using slug pellets; from leaving human hair around vegetable plants to scattering old coffee beans around flowers to keep them safe.

The downpours have also meant that six in 10 Brits hadn’t tended to their garden since last year and a third of people were embarrassed at the state of theirs. Visit Youtube.com/bandq to get gardening inspiration from B&Q’s ‘How to’ videos.
