Over 2,000 people have benefited from this new service in the Northern Trust area which spans four council areas including Antrim and Newtownabbey District and Mid and East Antrim District.

Doreen Bolton, a Health and Wellbeing Locality Lead with the Northern Trust, said; “Recognising the needs of many who have no other form of support, the Trust Health and Wellbeing Team set up a new service from April 1 providing essential support for people shielding at home”.

The Health and Wellbeing Team make contact with those people referred to the service and provide each one with information, advice and signposting help with isolating and managing any related anxiety. Doreen said: “Where needed, help with food, fuel, medicines and social contact is provided by linking with the Community Hub in each Council area. We would like to convey our gratitude to the many community groups involved who are contributing to ensure people receive their support while isolating.”

One recipient of the service, who is currently experiencing deteriorating mental health issues and is in food and fuel poverty said: “The service provided was very valuable and I really appreciated being able to talk at length regarding my issues to such a caring individual. It was a ‘fantastic service’ and I was provided with a food parcel and help with fuel from my local council and was also offered a befriending service”.
