Allotment plan for Ballymena North

Ballymena North Partnership are considering establishing community allotments in the area and are encouraging local people to have their say.

The idea for the development of allotments on land behind Ballymena North Business and Recreation Centre came about at a strategic planning day held recently by Partnership board members.

Member, Colum Best told The Times that several years ago the Dunclug Partnership carried out a comprehensive community audit which confirmed considerable local interest in allotments but that at that time requirements including the availability of power and water supply to service such a project could not be met.

He said it was now considered that the land at the back of the Ballymena North Centre would be ideal for the development of allotments and that discussion with The Big Lottery on funding had already taken place.

He said it is of paramount importance that the project would be people-led with help and support from the directors of the Ballymena North Partnership and that local schools, church groups and youth clubs will all be contacted and consulted with.

Partnership Chair, P.J McAvoy said: “This project has the potential to be a fantastic asset to the local community and I look forward to the development of the allotments”
