Another car park for City of Culture traffic

LONDONDERRY’S local authority wants to turn football pitches at Templemore Sports Complex into a temporary car park for the new Ebrington entertainment venue four kilometres away in the Waterside, it’s emerged.

Derry City Council has applied for permission to use the pitches off the Buncrana road into a car park for concert goers.

The proposal is “to use the existing pitch, unaltered, as a temporary car park to facilitate the City of Culture Vital Venue. Temporary fencing and lighting will be erected when the car park is in use.”

The move follows a recent announcement that Londonderry’s Fort George is to be transformed into a car park - albeit temporarily - to accommodate UK City of Culture 2013.

The Old Clooney Army Barracks on the Limavady Road in the Waterside is also going to be converted into a temporary car park for citizens and visitors attending the new entertainment venue in Ebrington.

An application has been submitted to “lay an area of free draining stone on part of the existing site to form a temporary car park to facilitate the Vital Venue.”

The applicant - Derry City Council - has also applied for permission to erect temporary fencing and lighting when the car park is in use.
