A group of year ten students from the school recently took part in the Youth Philanthropy Initiative NI which offers the prize of a substantial sum to be presented to the winning school’s charity of choice.

Base (CAN), a local charity which supports people with both learning and physical disabilities and has a facility in Ballymena’s People’s Park was delighted to receive the donation.

A spokesperson said: “We had a visit from the pupils of St Louis Grammar who won the Youth Philanthropy Initiative. As you can imagine, they were up against a lot of big name charities. They created a very personal and emotional power point which described what we do here at Base Ballymena (CAN) and what it means to our members and their families.

“We are delighted for the pupils’ achievement after months of hard work putting their project together and again a massive thank-you from us here at the Base. It will make a huge difference to our guys.”

The students in the winning year ten Lurig group were Maria McCann, Ciaran Agnew, Joseph Agnew and Siannah McKeown.

The judges were very impressed by the research and personal input which they said “reflected some of the basic local issues which confront those people in our local community who have learning or physical impairments”.

The winning group will now go on to represent the school at a prizegiving ceremony in Belfast in June when all the Northern Ireland winners will be present.
