Mr Aiken, a former Royal Navy submarine commander, described it as “an immense privilege” to have been elected by the people of South Antrim and vowed to work hard for everyone in the constituency, “regardless of race, religion, gender or background.”

Mr Clarke paid tribute to his party leader for her efforts during the course of the election campaign.

“I am urging people to get behind Arlene Foster and unite behind what is again going to be the largest political party in Northern Ireland,” he said.

The six elected members are: Paul Girvan (DUP); Pam Cameron (DUP); David Ford (Alliance); Declan Kearney (Sinn Fein); Trevor Clarke (DUP) and Steven Aiken (UUP)
