He pointed out that £1,067.55 of the amount was raised through the Ballymena Sports Awards and that David Toney contributed £275 as part of a Ju Jitsu fundraiser.

Thanking Ald. McAvoy, Rae Kirk, Fundraising Director of the Samaritans said: “All funds will be used to provide emotional support to those in distress who phone, text, email or call at The Mount Street branch of The Samaritans. Just £3.88 pays for one call to be answered by a volunteer.

“Samaritan funding comes from individuals, trusts and companies without whom Samaritans would not be able to carry on providing this valuable service.

“The caller is listened to in confidence, without fear of being judged, which can be a huge relief and is often the first step in finding a way to cope,” said Rae.

Volunteers do not offer advice because what works for one person might not work for another. The “Samaritans believe that given the time and space to work through problems or difficulties in confidence, everyone can find an inner strength that lets them find their own way forward.

“The current economic situation means thousands more people are feeling the stress of money worries and increased pressure. Samaritans help ordinary people – like your own families and colleagues – who just happen to be going through an extra-ordinary crisis.

“Whatever you are going through, The Samaritans are there to help 24 hours a day, if in need of emotional support please telephone 08457909090 or email [email protected].”
