Ballymena steps back in time to war torn era

VISITORS to The Braid on Easter Saturday would be forgiven for thinking they were stepping back to 1940s Ballymena.

The ever popular Wartime Easter Event, organised by the Mid-Antrim Museum, centred on sights and sound and entertainment that would have been familiar to those who grew up during the Second World War.

Hundreds turned out to join in the fun. Many joined in the sing-along of wartime hits and enjoyed watching Dance Unlimited perform some of the popular dances seen in the old dance halls.

Ladies during the war were extremely well dressed and turned out and this was ably demonstrated by the glamorous models from the Living Vintage Company. Their display of daytime and evening wear was very well received by the large crowds who attended. The highlight was a model in bridal wear with all the accessories.

Meanwhile children enjoyed playing with the 1940s toys, colouring in the activity sheets and completing the popular Easter Bunny Hunt round the museum to win themselves a mini Easter egg.

Throughout the event re-enactors from the Living History Organisation strolled about the museum chatting to the public and the War Years Remembered staff were kept busy answering questions about their central display, a recreation of a 1940s house and listening to many personal experiences of the war. The War Years Remembered exhibition finished on Friday.
