Borough backing for ‘Small Business Saturday’ promotion

Retailers – and shoppers - across the Borough of Mid and East Antrim have been urged to ‘get involved’ in the UK-wide initiative ‘Small Business Saturday’.

This is aimed at encouraging consumers into independent and smaller retailers on one of the biggest Christmas shopping weekends of the year.

Councillor Billy Ashe, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough said: “We are delighted to support Small Business Saturday and will be encouraging local shops in the towns and villages across Mid and East Antrim to take part.

“We are also asking consumers to ‘shop local’ and so support small businesses in their own communities,” Cllr Ashe said, adding: “Local shops contribute over £37bn to the economy, providing over 407,000 jobs to a diverse range of people in their communities.”

This year the Saturday chosen for the campaign focus will be the 5 December with hundreds of business-related events taking place all over the UK.

Now entering its third year, Small business Saturday is already the UK’s most successful small business campaign.

The day itself aims to increase revenue for local small businesses, encourage consumers to promote the benefits of shopping locally and raise awareness of local entrepreneurs and help local businesses build up longer-term trade by attracting new customers.

The campaign is also an effort to get consumers to understand the significant, positive effect their local spending can have in their communities at a key time the shopping calendar.

Local businesses, including restaurants, wholesalers, pubs, beauty salons to local shops can participate in the campaign by offering promotions, deals and complimentary services to entice people to shop with them on the day and in the run up to Christmas.
