Speaking out following an update to last week’s Community Planning Committee on the three Youth Council events held since March 2014 in the Braid, Cr Reid said he was “keen” to see Larne and Carrick youngsters be able to participate and was backed in that view by Crs Geraldine Mulvenna and May Beattie.

The meeting was informed by a Council officer that the project, which had been initiated by Cr Billy Henry, enabled Year 11 local post primary pupils the chance to learn and understand the role of civic leadership and the positive impact it can have.

They heard that pupils had described the events. which had included a Mock Council meeting and a Prioritising Services Workshop, as a “great learning experience”.

The committee went on to approve a recommendation, on the proposal of Cr DA Wilson, that the Steering Group should meet in September to review the draft programme and to progress the 2016 event.

They also approved expenditure to allow the Steering Group to proceed with the arrangements for the event on a date to be agreed with the participating schools and that officers review how to take forward a similar approach for Carrickfergus and Larne.
