Bound over after Dunclug disorder

A BALLYMENA man has appeared in court after he became embroiled in civil unrest in the town's Dunclug estate last month.

A charge of behaviour likely to cause a breach of the peace was withdrawn against Ciaran McGill (23), of Dunclug Park, after he agreed to be bound over to keep the peace for 18 months on his own bail of 500.

Ballymena Magistrates Court was told that McGill was arrested on January 26 as police responded to “serious public disorder” between members of the travelling community and local residents.

Solicitor Ciaran Shiels said McGill had not been involved in any of the previous disturbances.

He said McGill had made a “stupid remark” to another man who was known to him, which had led to a disagreement.

Binding McGill over, District Judge Des Perry told him: “You allow the proper forces to maintain law and order.”
