Building the skills of future construction workforce at NR College

A Northern Regional College competition in partnership with Skillbuild NI has brought together construction apprentices from across the college campuses, to promote excellence among the future workforce of the construction industry.

The one-day competition has been designed to develop the skills of apprentices and improve competition standards across construction trades.

Each winner from the competition categories which included bricklaying, cabinet making, carpentry, joinery and plastering will now go on to compete in the Skillbuild NI annual two day competition.

Skillbuild NI competitions help to develop excellence in the construction trades and winners from the regional Skillbuild NI competition are automatically entered to compete in the UK National Finals.

Senior Lecturer in School of the Built Environment at NRC, Jim Jackson said: “NRC is delighted to be working in partnership with Skillbuild NI to enable our apprentices to demonstrate the quality of their work, while also inspiring them to continue to develop their skills to rival those at a regional and national level.”

Mr Jackson added: “Skillbuild competitions are high on the agenda of the Department for the Employment and Learning and it is well recognised that these competitions play a key part in lifting standards and performance while promoting and embedding world class skills into the workplace.”

All the apprentices who took part in the inter campus competition received their first, second or third place certificates at a prize giving ceremony at NRC’s Ballymena Campus.
