Bus Station incidents - Heads meet with police

AN increase in incidents of anti-social behaviour at Ballymena Bus Station since the start of the new school term has flagged up the need to implement a dedicated strategy that will keep children safe while they wait to board buses.

A meeting on safety awareness is to be held this week at the Galgorm Road depot involving officers of Ballymena PSNI, representatives of Translink and Ballymena Community Safety Partnership, and school principals from throughout the borough.

Releasing details to The Ballymena Times on Friday, Inspector John Allen said that the number of incidents which had so far occurred had been low and "mainly not of a serious nature".

He said they included fights and "people (non-students) coming in looking for trouble".

T

he Inspector revealed that in one incident, last Monday (September 13) an arrest was made when a 'non-student' was found to be in possession of a small amount of Class B drugs at the bus station which, he said, was well covered by CCTV.

Inspector Allen said: "There are on any one day around 2,500 school children at the bus station and their safety is a priority.

"Translink do a good job and deserve praise as they have the station operating like a well oiled machine".
