There were 13,426 domestic abuse crimes recorded by the PSNI in 2014/15.

Mrs Cameron, who has worked with Rosemary Magill MBE and Women’s Aid ABCLN for many years raising awareness of domestic violence, described the crime as a “scourge on our society”.

“Domestic violence and abuse manifests its self in many ways, as physical violence, as sexual violence, as mental, emotional and financial abuse,” Mrs Cameron said.

She added: “Domestic violence and abuse affects every age group, every race, religion and class – it knows no boundaries.

“I have worked with Rosemary Magill MBE and Women’s Aid ABCLN for many years, primarily in an attempt to raise awareness of the crime that is domestic violence and was pleased to be able to name them officially as my nominated charity in my Mayoral term in Antrim back in 2010.

“Domestic violence is a scourge on our society and it remains to date to be severely under-reported to police and is still a crime which as a society, we continue to sweep under the carpet, especially within the family circle.”
