Castle delegation gathers momentum

BALLYMENA Councillors fighting the case for a purpose-built, single campus for the borough's three special schools have been pleased to learn that their planned delegation to the Education Minister is attaining support from their counterparts in other local authorities within the NEELB (Education Board) area.

At last Monday night’s monthly meeting in Ardeevin, it was reported that five Councils (Antrim, Carrickfergus, Coleraine, Larne and Moyle) had nominated representatives to take part in that delegation.

Ballymena Borough Council has also sought representatives from each of the three special schools including principals, Board of Governors’ Chairs and parents.

Alderman Hubert Nicholl observed at the meeting that it was now a question of when the Education Minister could receive the delegation.

“The new school must be got on the ground as soon as possible,” he added.

Supporting his remarks, Cllr Monica Digney said: “The Minister has to look long and hard at this. It is absolutely ridiculous that special needs has been left the way it is.

“When it comes to special needs you really haven’t a hope and that is shameful!”
