Community Service for Tobacco smuggler

A Polish man with an address at Cloughwater Road, Ballymena, has been sentenced for evasion of duty after an investigation by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

Tomasz Czaikowski was arrested by HMRC in September 2010 when a search of his vehicle revealed nearly 150,000 non-UK duty paid cigarettes hidden beneath a quantity of second hand clothes. The estimated excise duty evaded was £30,921.

John Whiting, Assistant Director, Criminal Investigation for HMRC, said:

“Czajkowski stole from UK taxpayers, deliberately concealing cigarettes for the purposes of evading duty for financial gain. His motivation was simply greed.

“With cheap cigarettes you may think you are getting a bargain, but you really have no idea what you are paying for.
