OAPs warn of possible ‘injured friend’ scam

An elderly couple in the Demesne area believe they foiled an attempt to steal from them last night.

Around 10pm, they answered a knock at their door to find a girl, thought to be in her teens, in some distress.

The woman of the house said that the girl pointed to a ‘boy’ lying at the side of the pavement.

“She asked me for help because her friend had fallen and cut himself,” explained the woman.

Sensing something untoward was going on, the woman called out to her husband to ‘phone 999 for the police’.

At that, the ‘injured male’ sprang to his feet and bolted, swiftly followed by the distressed female.

“We believe that this was a ploy to get into the house and steal cash or valuables,” said the woman. “We just want to make other people aware of this kind of behaviour.”

The couple say they will be speaking to police about the incident today.
