Police have asked for anyone who saw two women giving chocolate to a child in Cullybackey last Saturday evening to contact them.

The Ballymena Times understands that the incident may have been the spark for subsequent reports of an abduction bid.

The Times asked police to comment on the report, received from the Deputy Mayor of Mid & East Antrim Council, Timothy Gaston, that a child in the village had been approached and offered chocolate in what was feared to be an abduction bid.

In response the PSNI stated: “Police in Ballymena received a report of an incident in the Ard Na Maine area of Cullybackey on the evening of Saturday July 4. It was reported at approximately 7pm that two unknown females in a blue coloured car stopped with a young girl and gave her a bar of chocolate before driving off.

“Anyone who saw the incident is asked to contact Police at Ballymena on the non-emergency number 101.”
