Wheelie bin incident - four arrested

Police have arrested three men and a woman in connection with an incident in the Sentry Hill area of Ballymena.

Detective Chief Inspector Tracey Mageean commented: “A man has sustained injuries which are not believed to be life threatening and is now in a stable condition in hospital.

“He was inside a wheelie bin which had been taped up and was found by a person out walking a dog. That person had the presence of mind to call the ambulance service and police immediately.

“Detectives have launched a full investigation with a definite line of enquiry as evidenced by our four arrests. At this time, I do not believe that there is a sectarian motive nor do I consider that it is paramilitary related. This incident has shocked local people as this an area where crime isn’t prevalent.

“Interviews of those arrested will be taking place and the investigation is at a very early stage. However, I would ask that anyone who saw suspicious activity in the Doury Road, Dunclug or Dunvale areas of Ballymena yesterday afternoon contact police. You can telephone Detectives at Ballymena on 028 2566 7202 or 0845 600 8000.

“Alternatively if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111” .
