Danger: Giant Hogweed alert in Ballymena

A poisonous plant which can cause nasty burns if touched has been spotted growing at various places along the River Braid.

Now Mid & East Antrim Councillor, Stephen Nicholl has urged locals to be aware of the dangers posed by Giant Hogweed. He said: “This plant causes a nasty burn and rash if touched. I have asked the council to identify all locations where it has appeared and urge landowners including council and Rivers Agency to take action.

“This should include removal and placing warning signs in affected areas. I would urge people not to try cutting down the plant as it requires specialist removal to prevent spreading it even further.”
