Donate and help the Royal Irish in Afghanistan

BALLYMENA'S generous nature is once again being called upon, as friends and family of the Royal Irish Regiment have asked to support their cause.

By simply purchasing something extra when you go shopping, could help make life that bit more comfortable for these brave soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

Whether it be toiletries, savoury or sweet snacks, confectionary, clothing, pharmaceutical or something entertaining, every little would indeed help these brave lads.

The group aren't looking for anything lavish or expensive, just something you would find in your shopping trolley, perhaps a toothbrush? some snacks? or even a magazine?

Currently there are two ways to donate, one is to drop off your donation at the Ballymena Services club, or you can contact Heather on 07738419431 who will be very happy to assist you.

Ballymena has always had a long still standing history with the Royal Irish Regiment and through this connection the town has always shown its support.

In 2008, Ballymena celebrated the safe return of troops from Afghanistan, with a homecoming parade for the Royal Irish, which provided a fitting commemoration for those who were injured or killed in the conflict. This parade just so happened to be the first of its kind in Northern Ireland.

Thousands of Ballymena people relished the opportunity to voice their appreciation and show their pride in the regiment. The cheering never stopped and even the battle hardened soldiers struggled to fight back the tears.

Also that year, the Times spoke to Neil Hughes from Ballymena, a soldier of 2 Royal Irish Regiment stationed in Camp Bastion situated in the harsh Afghan desert of Helmand Province. Neil was just one of a number of local troops who have made the journey to Afghanistan and now friends and family of these soldiers are asking you to donate a little to help those who give so much.

A number of fireside quizzes and charity nights are currently being planned by friends and family to help support the regiment.

Over the coming weeks they plan to contact local businesses and schools to see if they will be willing to receive donations.

For further information, or if you would like your school or business to help, please contact Heather on 07738419431.
