Frew calls on drivers to put the brakes on

COUNCILLOR PAUL Frew DUP MLA for North Antrim has pleaded with road users to consider their speed when passing the Riverlea housing development on the Drumnagrove Road, Rathkenny.

Speaking on site Cllr Frew stated: “The local community have contacted me regarding the speed of the motorists using this road. They are concerned for the number of children who play in the area, the elderly people who walk the road and for drivers who pull out of the development. This is a very straight road at this point and it can be easy to speed on it but people should be aware that anything can happen on any stretch of road whether it be a young child run out or a tyre blow out.”

Frew explained that he had a meeting with Roads Service on site with local residents attending and the Roads Service have agreed to conduct a survey of traffic flows and speeds to establish the extent of the problem with those who are travelling in excess of the current national speed limit. The results of the survey will be discussed with the PSNI which may lead to possible enforcement.

A ‘slow’ road marking will be provided on the approach to the site from Cushendall Road and ‘give way’ junction markings will be provided at the junction of Riverlea with Drumnagrove Road. Consideration will be given to the provision of a ‘hidden dip’ sign on the approach from Clough and ‘cattle crossing’ signs as a local farmer moves cattle across this road twice a day.

Frew expressed his gratitude to the Roads Service for meeting him and residents on site and for being very helpful in trying to assuage the fears and concerns of Riverlea residents but again asked the road users who are inclined to speed on this stretch of road to be aware of the many potential hazards.
