Frew seeks safer crossing at Crebilly Road

NORTH Antrim MLA and Ballymena Councillor, Paul Frew says more safety measures are needed at Crebilly Road to protect people crossing than the existing speed bumps and pedestrian island.

Mr Frew met last week on site with Road Service and community representatives of Ballykeel to discuss what more can be done to enhance pedestrian safety at Crebilly Road in the vicinty of the Tesco store.

Speaking afterwards, he said: “It is very clear when I’m out and about in Ballykeel that this is one of the biggest concerns that people have and I am pleased that Road Service met with myself and local residents to explore ways of enhancing safety at the entrance of the local Tesco store.

“While we were there discussing this issue some people approached us to ask if we were discussing the crossing and told us how they were concerned especially for the elderly and the young who had to cross. It is clear that the existing island in the middle of the road and the bumps across to it are not enough,” said Mr Frew.

He added: “Road service told us that this section of road would qualify for a more enhanced crossing because of the numbers of pedestrians crossing to use the Tesco store and the number of vehicles using the road.

“Road service also stated that a live approved planning application applied for by Tesco had enhanced road safety measures included in it consisting of a crossing up from the entrance and a new exit on to the Larne road link,” said Mr Frew.

“We had a brief meeting with the new store manager of Tesco and it was agreed that I would speak to personnel within Tesco to ascertain what their plans are for this store in the immediate future and the current live planning application. Before that though I want to get the full detail of the measures within the planning application.

“What is clear is the demand from the community to have a safer road for pedestrians and drivers alike before someone is seriously hurt and I will apply pressure where I can to see this put in place,” he said.
