FROG’s fundraising team have event down to a ‘D’!

The organisations which benefitted were Cancer Focus Northern Ireland, Marie Curie and Friends of Cancer.

FROG began back in 2006 when a motley crew of amateur cyclists set off from the Glen Bar in Glenbush, near Loughgeil, to complete 100 miles around the Glens of Antrim in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. Over £6,000 was raised. The organiser, Loughgeil man Francis “Fred” McIntyre, then left to make his fortune in the deserts of Saudi Arabia

In 2007, the baton was passed to a few Glenravel lads who came up with the “FROG” (Fun Run Of the Glens). With a view to some fun, the charity cycle included an evening of entertainment in the local parish hall which was hailed by all as an excellent day and night. In excess of £12,000 was raised for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

In fact, from 2006 to 2014 a truly amazing sum of almost £108,000 has been raised for various cancer charities.

But in 2015 the team recived the bad news that one of the Founder Members, Damian McAuley, had been diagnosed with a rare form of Cancer (Ductal Adenocarcinoma) and lost an eye.

To raise awareness and show support, the FROG crew added Damien’s initial to the event, hence D’FROG 2015 was born.

Numbers increased dramatically to over 640 Cyclists and funds being generated of £48,053 for Cancer Focus NI, Marie Curie and Friends of Cancer.

Organiser Paul McToal said: “Once again, I am humbled by the generosity of all those who participated and helped on the day, it is truly inspiring to see so many cyclists caring for charity and enjoying the Glens, I look forward to next year with vigour and also a little anxiety! and hope to see you all again.
