Latest statistics from the Chest, Heart and Stroke charity show over 5,000 people in the Ballymena and Antrim area are on the coronary heart disease register.

And in 2013, nearly 300 deaths in the area were attributed to problems with the circulatory system.

Kerry Anderson Director of CHS said funds were needed for vital research and to ensure that the healthcare message continues to reach vulnerable people.

She said: “We are asking the public to support us this summer by having a Ticker Tea Party or fundraiser of their choice to help us educate about symptoms and help save lives.

“Whether it’s a BBQ for friends at home, a red heart themed work lunch or a family quiz we need your support.”

Kerry added that people could also raise funds by taking part in the hugely popular series of challenge walks which are hosted by the charity.

“It’s amazing how many people really enjoy getting involved with others on these treks. Locally we have events such as the Causeway Coast Challenge Walk and the North Antrim Challenge Walk.”

TheTake Heart Campaign will be running from July to September.
