Help with Universal Credit

Age NI is urging people aged over 50 in Ballymena who are confused about the new Universal Credit benefit and how it may affect them to get in touch.

Jacqui Corscadden, Head of Services at Age NI, said, ‘Universal Credit is expected to be introduced this autumn as a result of the Welfare Bill in Northern Ireland.

“For new claimants, if one person is of working age, a couple will have to claim the new Universal Credit. Existing claims will remain the same. However, the confusion around this new benefit has prompted many calls to the Age NI Advice Service from couples who fear their benefit entitlements will be affected leaving them considerably worse off.

“Anyone concerned about the impact of Universal Credit and how it might affect them can call the Age NI Advice Service on freephone 0808 808 7575 and speak to a trained advisor in confidence.”
