January 6 start for town centre waterworks scheme

Improvements to the water infrastructure in the Wellington Street, Mill Street, Meetinghouse Lane, Granville Drive, William Street and Hill Street areas of Ballymena will start on January 6.

NI Water say the scheme will last some 12 weeks and is “essential”.

It stated: “The existing infrastructure is in need of repair, and it is essential that NI Water upgrades the watermains in advance of Ballymena Borough Council’s “Public Realm” scheme getting underway. This work will reduce the future potential risk of burst watermains in the area and will improve the security, quality, and reliability of the water supply, while also reducing leakage in the area.

“In order to reduce the impact on local businesses and road users, the works will be carried out at night. We have been liaising with DRD Roads Service and agreed to carry out this work during the following working hours Monday-Wednesday 7.00pm-6.30am and Thursday-Friday 9.30pm-6.30am.”

During those times it will be necessary to close Wellington Street, Mill Street, Meetinghouse Lane, Granville Drive, William Street and Hill Street. Signed diversions will be in place and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

Reinstatement will be carried out at the end of each shift, so that the roads can be reopened and on-street parking restored during normal day-time working hours.

NI WaterT also point out that there may be an interruption to your water supply during this work. However, customers will receive advance notification of exactly when this is planned.
