Kells man licensed for PCI ministry

Family and friends celebrated with Kells native Ross Kernohan as he was licensed for the Presbyterian ministry at his ‘home’ congregation.

Ross is grateful for the Christian home in which he grew up and recalls making a personal commitment to God at the age of 16 after hearing his Minister, Rev. Brian Boyd preach on Revelation 21.

The 33-year-old says: “Kells Church is a very nurturing congregation, the people have a strong desire to see people not only come to Christ but to grow and develop in their faith. There is plenty of opportunity to get involved in the various ministries associated with the congregation. I was involved in the Sunday school, Youth Fellowship and Holiday Bible Club.”

“Latterly when I started to test my call to ministry, Rev. Brian Boyd gave me the opportunity to preach. It’s great to belong to a congregation who really desire to help you reach your God given potential, Kells Church has always encouraged its members to step out in faith both prayerfully and practically.

“It will always have a special place in my heart”, he added.

After graduating, Ross worked as an IT Manager for Samaritan’s Purse before spending time working as a Youth Pastor in Glasgow under Rev Tom Nelson.

Ross said: “Tom encouraged me to explore my calling to the ministry of word and sacrament. After I finished in Glasgow, I met with the Rev Boyd again and he encouraged me this time to gain life experience before applying for the ministry. This led me to working with Medair, a Christian Humanitarian Aid organisation in Switzerland, as an IT Officer.”

“Working with Medair, was a great opportunity, I got to work with some amazing people, visit some strange and wonderful places. But the greatest blessing of all was meeting my wife Fanny. Being a minister can be a lonely calling, it’s great to have a companion to share the highs and lows with”, he added.

Ross enrolled at Union College in 2011 and having completed his studies he is now set to serve his assistantship at Second Randalstown under the supervision of Rev. Robin Brown.

Looking ahead to this, Ross stated: “I am excited about what lies ahead, not necessarily because I believe that I have anything special to offer but because I believe with all my heart that when God calls, He equips.”

“I want to preach with conviction, with passion the message that God has laid on my heart, to be able to communicate in a way that people can easily understand and apply to their hearts.”
