Mr Swann, who is Chairman of the Assembly’s All Party Group on Congenital Heart Disease, received the funds, which were raised at the Club’s charity pigeon auction, after he presented trophies to winners at the club’s annual prize giving.

He said: “The members, supporters and friends of the Kells Pigeon Club are to be warmly congratulated for their support of the Barbour Ward and I know this generous donation will be put to very good use for the benefit of the children which this vital ward cares for.

“The club not only has a fine reputation within the racing pigeon fraternity but has also gained an equally credible name for its fund-raising activities for very worthy causes,” he said.

Mr Swann also had the honour during the evening of presenting his father, Brian, who races as B Swann and Son, with the prestigious J Scott Memorial Cup.
