The renovation project was taken forward by Kellswater & Tullynamullan Cultural Society which was established back in March 2007 to benefit people living in the local community.

The aim was to transform stone building, which is in its 126th year and which had become cold, damp and draughty, into a comfortable meeting place and social centre.

Work on the Hall began in August 2011 and it was reduced to a shell with just four walls and a roof remaining. During the renovation modern building methods were used to prevent rising damp and to reduce heat loss.

Main contractors, D&D Builders, ably assisted by local tradesmen and an assortment of willing volunteers, carried out the renovation which was substantially grant aided by the Big Lottery Fund.

Two Kellswater stalwarts, Jackie McKee and Tom McDonald unveiled a plaque in the Hall on September 16 to celebrate and mark its official re-opening.

During the proceedings, the Society’s Chairman John Cupples thanked all those who had helped with the renovations and also Cromkill LOL 543 for the use of their hall during the 10 months when Kellswater Hall was out of commission.

Other speakers congratulated the Cultural Society on a job well done and the Society’s vice-chair, Robert Galloway, thanked the ladies for providing refreshments.

Musical entertainment was provided by Sylvia Lutton (organ), Rachel Lutton (violin) and Stephen Rankin (flute).

Stephen and Rachel, who are members of Kellswater Flute Band, have both competed in the NI Young Musician of the Year with Stephen winning the competition in 2009 and Rachel being a finalist in 2013.
