Late night speeders cause for concern on Carnlough Road

A spate of accidents and near misses on the Ballymena-Carnlough Road are a growing cause for concern.

Now a local MLA has asked police and Transport NI to consider measures to improve safety on the road.

DUP assemblyman, Paul Frew said: “I know a number of residents who have been badly injured through accidents lately and it seems to be down to speed by a third party.

“Following my request Transport NI are undertaking a speed survey of the road particularly at sections that have seen an increase in accidents.”

PSNI acknowledge that, on average, speed compliance is relatively good in both directions - ranging from the the mid to high 40’s mph - it was noted that there were individual vehicles identified as travelling in excess of the national speed limit.

“Another interesting find was that most of these exceptional speeds appeared to occur in the early hours of the morning when traffic was light,” said Mr. Frew.

“I would stress to people this is a very dangerous stretch of road , even though traffic may be light the topography of the road and weather conditions can lead to very serious hazards on the road and people should be mindful of that.

“Some of my constituents have been seriously hurt because someone wasn’t paying due care and attention.”

The assmeblyman said that PSNI have committed to discussing any available additional measures with Transport NI in order to make the road safer for all users.
